Mr Elly Obwaka


Elly Obwaka has been a lecturer in the Discipline of Chemical Engineering at UKZN since July 2000. He has been involved in curriculum development and has played a pivotal role in the introduction and enhancement of a number of modules. He has also supervised a number of successful final-year undergraduate laboratory and industrial projects. He has managed to secure vacation work places in industry for many students over the years, especially at SAPREF and Umgeni Water.

Mr Obwaka has been a member of the Board of the School of Engineering since 2007. He has represented the Discipline of Chemical Engineering in the School Marketing Committee and often speaks in Career events for high-school students. 

Mr Obwaka has been a Member of the Council of the South African Institution of Chemical Engineers since 2004, was secretary of the KZN branch from 2002-2009 and was elected national Honorary Secretary in 2015. He has served on the organising committee of their annual conference in various capacities and has edited conference proceedings. Elly has used his links with SAIChE to benefit the university on a number of fronts.

Mr Obwaka serves or has served as an external examiner of courses offered by the UCT, Stellenbosch University, DUT, MUT and Vaal University of Technology. He has also served as an independent observer to the accreditation team of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Mangosuthu University of Technology.

Mr Obwaka has presented papers in peer-reviewed conferences the highlights being the World Congress of Chemical Engineering in August 2009 and the South African Chemical Engineering Congress in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2014.

He holds a Master of Science in Engineering degree (Water and Environmental Management) from the former UDW, scoring a distinction in this work.
